Blacksburg: Home Sweet Home

Nestled along the New River in the Alleghany and Blue Ridge Mountains, Blacksburg offers an abundance of beauty and outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking, caving, rock climbing, and golfing. After-work bike rides on the nearby Huckleberry Trail and group hikes among Torc’rs are common. Combined with the plethora of resources for autonomous vehicle testing and continued state support, it’s easy to see why Virginia has been our home for 15 years.

The Perfect Testing Ground

Our headquarters location provides a unique combination of road and weather conditions. It is located near the Virginia Smart Road – one of the world’s most advanced testing facilities for transportation and safety research. Operated by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute in partnership with the Virginia Department of Transportation, the Smart Road can replicate driving conditions and simulate various weather, road, and lighting conditions in rural, highway and connector settings.

The town of Blacksburg maintains over 500 acres of green space and includes tennis courts, a skate park, aquatic center, fitness center and many recreational programs. Cultural, art and sporting events are abundant due in part to the proximity to three nearby universities, and Downtown Blacksburg is adjacent to the 3rd largest university in Virginia. Its streets are frequently traveled by pedestrians and cyclists, as well as rapid influxes of visitors during large sporting events. Albuquerque: the Perfect Testing Ground

We chose to expand our on-road testing efforts to New Mexico and establish a test center in Albuquerque because they are the perfect testing grounds for self-driving trucks. Together, we are working to make the roads safer.

Sandia Mountains in Albuquerque New Mexico
"The culture in Albuquerque is one of a kind, it brings a diverse set of people together as a familia through its hospitality and food. The diverse landscape near Albuquerque provides a myriad of recreational activities in which to enjoy your free time, from skiing and snowboarding, to hiking and mountain biking. Come and check it out from above during our hot air balloon festival!"
Gabriel, Test Engineer
"Torc in Albuquerque is a wonderful thing! Besides being a city that is rich with culture and history, it is one of the most beautiful places I have lived in. My absolute favorite thing to do is to hike one of the many trailheads at the base of the Sandia Mountains at dusk."

Testing in Albuquerque

Albuquerque recognizes Torc as a leader in emerging technology and is pleased to provide the bedrock as we advance the unique field of autonomous driving. This area hosts a high-freight volume and is home to two major trucking routes referred to as the “Big-I.” The interchange between 1-25 and 1-40 was awarded excellence in highway design and is one reason Albuquerque enjoys little traffic, despite being one of the nation’s most traveled areas.

This environment offers an ideal location for us to build and test our vehicles. We will utilize these routes in this integral part of the long-haul trucking industry as you help us take trucking to the next level.
