Merging onto a densely packed highway is a challenge even for humans. We must track other cars moving at high speeds while the landscape changes every second as vehicles traverse across lanes. Our self-driving car’s camera and sensor suite creates a comprehensive image of our car’s surroundings, and our autonomous system works to predict other vehicles’ next moves so our car can find a safe gap in traffic.
Here, our self-driving car enters a highway with fairly heavy traffic. It remains in a lane that is moving quickly enough to pass a van, and then performs an autonomous lane change to prepare to merge onto the next exit lane.
