Building the autonomous ecosystem: Virtual Driver and Mission Control
Purpose-built for a new
mode of transportation
We’re not just writing the code to drive the truck.
We know the product isn’t the self-driving truck; it’s the entire autonomous ecosystem. It’s a purpose-built mode of transportation that will live alongside freight companies and their customized logistics systems. It’s building and developing the job descriptions needed to run an autonomous hub, and where those hubs make the most sense across the United States, for the drivers, the freight trucking companies, and importantly, the economy.
It’s creating protocols that will make our roadways safer for everyone. It’s constantly learning from drivers, logistics partners, and regulatory officials what could work vs what should work best. What is the best autonomous use case for everyone.
It’s not just the software. The software is just the beginning. It’s knowing that autonomous technology will change our world.
SEE.
Think.
Act.
We designed our technology to emulate the driving styles of highly skilled and safe drivers. Our system bases its driving decisions on an approach we call See-Think-Act. The system first perceives the world and understands its location (perceiving and localizing). It uses these factors to calculate the optimal driving decision (thinking). Finally, it executes this decision in real-time to navigate its environment. Our system continuously performs these tasks as it traverses the roadway.
See: A Full Sensor Suite
It starts with seeing. Our Virtual Driver uses integrated cameras, long and short-range Lidar, and long and short-range radar to detect its surroundings. This sensor suite uses each component’s strengths to provide a 3D picture of the environment, detect objects, and calculate the movement of vehicles around the truck for better prediction and decision-making.
Think: PLANNING THE NEXT MOVE
Road environments and traffic conditions change in the blink of an eye. Torc vehicles use custom high-definition maps to plot out routes and ensure the safest, most efficient trip possible. Our advanced localization and prediction algorithms provide our vehicles the data to determine the next safe move on busy and unpredictable roadways by planning and updating where the truck is on the road in real-time.
Act: Safe Maneuvering
Level 4 autonomous behaviors respond to complex driving situations such as lane changes, merges, and sudden speed variations in traffic. These abilities are what transforms off-the-shelf driver assist technology – available in automobile technology today – into true autonomy.
FREIGHTLINER CASCADIA
As North America’s best-selling Class 8 truck, the Daimler Freightliner Cascadia is the best choice as the platform for our autonomous driver, reflecting its popularity and reliability in the commercial trucking industry.
TRUCKING & TRANSPORTATION
Transforming Trucking and Transportation
Trucking plays an essential role in our economy. The speed of technological innovation and the rise of eCommerce transform the way people drive and transport goods. Our goal is to revolutionize trucking technology so that freight haulers will be able to transport goods more efficiently and, most importantly, more safely.
Understanding the Needs of Our Customers
We are working toward this goal with our partners – not just OEMs but also customers, freight haulers, drivers and local communities. The enormous implications of self-driving technology are part of the reason why it’s critical that we learn from industry leaders, work with our partners and listen to our community. By working together, we can all realize improvements to road safety and economic benefits.
We aim to provide self-driving technology and services by creating a full network that will allow freight companies to meet the increasing demands of moving goods. Developing an infrastructure and usable services is just as important as the technology itself. We’re committed to close collaboration with trucking companies to create a solution that can be seamlessly integrated into existing logistics operations.
